Tour Route of the Wines (1 day)
Extremadura has 77.844 hectares of vineyards (4.850 hectares
in Caceres and 72.994 hectares in Badajoz), divided in
six vine-growing regions, today make up the Guarantee of
Origin Ribera del Guadiana.
Tierra de Barros is situated in the centre of Extremadura and known for
it’s wines.
Includes: Visit of three wineries with wine tasting (2 bodegas
with Guarantee of Origin Ribera del Guadiana and 1 traditional
winery).
Itinerary
Day 1: The Wine Route begins at the Bodega Viña
Extremeña in Almendralejo which devotes since four
generation to the vine-growing and wine production. The
quality of his brands is guaranteed by the most prestigious
world awards. Along the tour around the winery, you will
be able to visit the Botanical Garden, the ageing cellars
and the different museums (Sacred Art, Contemporary Art
and Decanters) as well as art collections.
We continue at Viña Santa Marina, a young winery situated on a beautiful
state, 8 km away from Merida and surrounded by 110 hectares of vineyard. The
winery is similar to a typical “cortijo extremeño” (a vineyard
including land and buildings with some architectonical characteristics of that
region) integrating the buildings into the marvellous surrounding landscape.
At the end of the route visit in Mérida of a private bodega where is elaborated
the Pitarra-wine. The process is handmade and the fermentation takes place in
large earthenware jars called Pitarra which give the wine his name.
